ABOUT:

Whale Tales is a web application that I designed to foster cultural awareness among children aged 8-11 by providing a platform for them to connect and collaborate through storytelling. The goal of this project was to empower young learners to learn about other cultures, share their own stories, and engage in meaningful cross-cultural dialogue.

Below is the design process that I followed throughout this project:

USER TESTING:

To ensure Whale Tales meets the needs of its young users, I conducted user testing with children aged 8-11, as well as parents and teachers to determine whether it would be appealing for them to encourage kids to use at home and in the classroom. Through these tests, I gathered valuable feedback on the app's usability, content relevance, and overall appeal. This input was crucial in refining the application, ensuring it provides an enjoyable and educational experience for its target audience.

Below are some highlights from the feedback I received about Whale Tales:

FUTURE DEVELOPMENT:

  • Conducting more rounds of user testing and improving design

  • Introducing Whale Tales to school classrooms

RESEARCH:

To determine the points of my target user group and features to prioritize in Whale Tales, I conducted research through user interviews with 15 kids aged 8-11, 10 parents, and 12 elementary school teachers.

Below are the main takeaways I gathered from these interviews:

SKETCHES: Building off of the research I conducted, I created sketches that were instrumental in visualizing the user interface for Whale Tales.

Below are the main takeaways I gathered from these interviews:

LOW-FI WIREFRAMES: Using ideas from my sketches, I created low-fidelity grayscales to evaluate the feasibility of my ideas. This allowed me to visually experiment with the layout and test the intuitiveness of the screens by showing them to users.
